Loose Cannons in Dawa's Pack!?

Loose Cannons in Dawa's Pack!?
Original Post: 19 Jun, 08 - 23:05

Soooooo...picture yourself in this position:

You've just spent weeks at sea level...absorbing a strange culture...further learning a new language...getting in a boat for the first time...pouring over guide books so you can drag your North American buddies up a huge mountain...consuming copious quantities of wine and whiskey that your chums have decanted...sucking in the second hand pipe smoke of your phat friends while playing Hearts 'til dawn...tending to the injuries and complaints of your cohorts...sleeping in the snow...hauling huge sleds full of food up steep icy hills...making multiple cache runs for gear...almost being hit by bus sized chunks of ice...then rushing up to high altitude with a backpack that is half your weight!

Is it hard to picture yourself in that position!? Well...it's not if you are Ang Dawa Sherpa from Nepal. He just did all that and more! =^o

Dawa's Monster Pack for High Camp

So often we hear of the Sherpa people...but rarely do people like Ang Dawa get the credit that they deserve...for the tremendous efforts they so selflessly and indefatigably output on climbing expeditions. People of the First World could never enjoy such comfortable adventures without people like Dawa.

Dawa...my hat goes off to you...for being such a calm, reliable soul. When we stand on the summit of Everest together...and K2...and the rest of the Seven Summits...I'll never be able to justly tell you how much I respect you for just being who you are. Thank you. =^)

Chris and I just hit the tent...as soon as the Sun 'went behind the mountain'. As I mentioned she's hiding from us for twelve hours while we are at Basin Camp. We just polished off a mountain of 'Chicken Curry...Don't Hurry' on rice...and we've moved onto Ho Cho con Velvet Negro. =^P

Chris, Dawa, Alex and Phill at Basin Camp (14,200ft)

I talked to Alex about 3 hrs ago. He sounds much better! They might do a summit push tomorrow. We're going to connect by Iridium at around 9am...then figure out a master game plan. If the weather holds...Alex and Dawa will do a summit push...and I'll solo up to High Camp on Friday night. You can watch it all play out via this site or blog...by checking back regularly...or subscribing to the blog.

If satellite signals work as they should...I'll be calling into am570radio.com tomorrow(Friday, June 20th) at 325pm PST. You can listen to the live stream via their site...or catch it later via their 'instant replay' or interview page. Super Fly Scott Stanko will also be posting it to my blog over the weekend.

Time will tell...as it always does!

Until Soon

Phill =^)
