A Perfect Day to Leave Denali! B^)

A Perfect Day to Leave Denali! B^)
2 Jul, 08 - 21:55

Monday (June 30th) dawned as the most perfect day to be on Denali's Kahiltna glacier...in recent history. 11,000ft camp had transformed from icy hell hole to a beautiful, calm zone of peacefulness.

Phill and Dawa at 11,000ft Camp on a Perfect Morning

At about 3am, Dawa and I donned our snowshoes... loaded our packs and sleds...and walked through ankle to knee deep snow during the wee and stunning hours of the morn. A bit of tobogganing might have happened...the sun slowly turned the distant peaks a brilliant hue of red...and I broke my front tooth on a frozen Snickers bar. A perfect morning...just perfect. B^)

By noon we were at 7200ft Base Camp...enjoying water from Lisa...and waiting for our plane to whisk us off the glacier. 330pm came quickly, and an single engine Otter arrived on the glacial airstrip. The weather could not have been better...clear, crisp and awe inspiring! B^)

Arrival in Talkeetna was lovely as the Tominator and Roberta were there to greet us. Off we went...back to Anchorage at light speed. We had very limited time to clean and organize before a 1am flight to Albuquerque! =^o

Leaving Anchorage...unfortunately!

With the help of the Gould brothers, Roberta...and Alex's parents(who happened to be visiting Anchorage)...we made our flight...with time to spare. Que bueno! =^]

A red eye flight led us to meet our Bostonian Scout friends on time...and the wonderful hospitality of Bill and Lil...the New Mexicans! =^)

The Pre-Phillmont Crew

I got my tooth fixed while vehicles were loaded and off we rolled to magical Taos!

If you'd like to continue to virtually travel with Dawa and I, I suggest you subscribe to this very blog!

Do it! =^]

Next stop...Garcia Park, New Mexico...B^)

Until Soon

Phill =^)
