Everest Circus...

9 Nov, 08 - 04:05

I've been getting all kinds of email asking, "What happened next?"...in regards to our adventures on the Amphu Laptse La Pass, etc.

Coming soon! =^]

I'm tap typing from my tent on the Ipaq at Gorak Shep(17000ft)...which is just next to the old South Side Everest Base Camp.

Looking NNW from our spot at Gorak Shep...with well worn Kala Patthar in the immediate background...and peaks various in the distant background.

It's day 30 of our 35 day Odyssey through space and time...and we are witnessing the Everest Circus...while on the Everest Circuit. The tea houses are full of Europeans, Asians and the odd North American. It's a far cry from the peace and tranquility of the Arun valley.

Looking east at sunset from Gorak Shep. Nuptse (centre) dominates while the little peak with some waning sunlight on it (left of centre) calls itself the summit of Everest.

Due to the amount of time we have been living at high altitude, the members of our
Secret Spot Tilman Crew are finding ourselves extremely well acclimatized to high altitude...while most of the people around us are hacking, wheezing and peeing blood! =^o

It's nice to be able to bounce around at 5182m/17000ft without coughing out a lung. The relative oxygen rate at this altitude is approximately 50 percent of what it would be at sea level. That number goes down to about 33 percent on the summit of Everest (8050m/29035ft).

It's good to feel good...no matter where one is. =^]

It's just past 9am on Sunday, November 9th, 2008...and I'm waiting for the hordes to clear out before having breakfast and admiring the scenery. I'm not a huge fan of crowds...and fortunately the madding ones are thinning.

The view out of my tent on Sunday morn (November 9th, 2008)

Dawa stopped by to tell me that the short hike that him and Caroline just did up Kala Patthar left him feeling like an ant on a trail. There was a steady stream of people marching up that well worn trail this morn. Dana and I expected that...so we both enjoyed sleeping like lions while the ants went marching...one by one...hurrah...hurrah. =^]

The Comg Ma birds are chirping and clucking at me with glee right now...while the huge yak bells go, 'Binggg...Bonnng...Bannnng!'...and I'm quickly reminded that, despite all the tourists, this is an exotic place.

We'll head down to the Yak town of Pheriche later today...and onwards to Lukla by the end of this coming week.

I should find time to get right up to date with the dispatches...while we ponder what sort of longer, more remote treks we can do in the future.

This has been a good one...B^]

I hope you are virtually enjoying climbing in the Himalayas with us via the dispatches at www.secretspoteverest.com and/or my blog!?

If you have not subscribed...you should...right now. I invite you. =^)

Until Soon
Phill =^)
