Road to Pheriche...2008
19 Nov, 08 - 13:57
Well...well...I'm back in Kathmandu...in my favorite room in the Kathmandu Guest House. The presence of only one person could make this ideal situation even better...=^]
I'm shaven and shorn...which feels soooooooooo good. =^)

Phill is shaven and shorn in Kathmandu on Nov 17th, 2008.
Now that I'm at a terrestrial internet connection, I can slowly upload some videos and have them added to these dispatches and blog entries. Joy! =^]
Let's go back to towards Everest Base Camp for a bit...
Dawa and I left Gorak Shep (5183m/17000ft) at around 1pm on Sunday, November 9th...after waiting for the masses of people to clear out. There was so much Euro Trash littering the area that we were dizzy with disgust. We eventually hopped and skipped our way to Lobuche(4900m/16072ft)...and waved goodbye to Everest...promising to be back soon. We made sort work of a still busy Lobuche and headed for Pheriche(4268m/14000ft). When we got down to Thukla/Dukla(4620m/15154ft), Dawa ran ahead....hoping to catch up with Dana and Caroline who had left Gorak Shep about 4 hours ahead of us. He actually got to Pheriche well before them...but that's another story.
Bajee Namgel, all the kitchen fellows and myself re-convened in Thukla and plodded towards Pheriche in the mid-afternoon. I was reminded of the last time I was 'On the Road to Pheriche'...June 19th , 2007. The skies weren't nearly as clear then and I hadn't realized that I was surrounded by such spectacular scenery.

The road to Pheriche in Nov 2008. Ama Dablam dominates.
The following URL shows what it was like while heading down to Pheriche last year:

Pheriche is a town made primarily of stone...from the yak fences to the roofs...all stone. Totally fascinating and almost going against the Buddhist tenet of everything being impermanent. Some of the structures in Pheriche are going to stand for hundreds of years. I was really pleased to see massive mounts of Yaks everywhere...and much fewer people than we were used to seeing at the Everest Circus. I suppose most folks take the left hand fork at Thukla and return via Dingbouche. I like Pheriche. =^]
Video of what to do on a typical day in Pheriche.
We arrived in Pheriche around 5pm...which was the same time as Dana and Caroline! =^o
They had managed to take a wrong turn and took the very, very long way to Pheriche. There was apparently some heated discussion between the two of them about which way to go. Caroline was slightly upset...and I couldn't blame her. Fortunately, Dana and her returned to speaking terms by bedtime. =^]
Bajee Namgel walks the 'streets' of Pheriche.
We settled into a little tea house and sipped Japanese Brandy and nibbled Toblerones...while in the shadows of Ama Dablam and Tabouche. Another perfectly clear night with big smiles on our sunburned faces. B^]
I hope you are continuing to virtually enjoying trekking and climbing in the Himalayas with us via the dispatches at www.secretspoteverest.com and/or my blog!?
If you have not subscribed...you should...right now. I invite you. =^)
Until Soon
