Bhaktatourists...

(top) The day I met Robbie of Bhaktapur (bottom) The Chipmunks invade Bhaktapur!
The busy Sun of Kathmandu is trying to push her way past the clouds and reveal herself to me. One thousand shades of grey and red pervade...as the steady hum of generators soothes the city. It's hard not to feel pure peacefulness in this kind of urban environment...but I suppose we all know that peace comes from within. Don't we?!
The peacefulness of Bhaktapur was rocked by the arrival of the Spanish Nuns, Bea and Carlotita (aka the Chipmunks), as the indefatigable Robbie guided us through its streets. We were truly Bhatkatourists. You can view a video (below) with proof. While you are perusing the blog...I suggest you put your email address in the subscribe box and hit the subscribe button. Maybe you already have?! If you haven't...you are missing out. Period. =^]
Bhaktatourists!=
I met Robbie on Valentine's Day...and he called me EVERY day...until I finally agreed to enjoy a cultural tour of his hometown.
Dawa and the Spaniards had just returned from the wilderness of the Lower Mustang, so they were in the need of a little 'city time'. Ahhhh...the Mustang. Dawa, Dana, Caroline and I...and about 10 other brave and fortunate souls are going to spend 40 days in the Mustang in late Summer/early Fall of 2010. Daily images and videos are going to be beamed, via satellite and right into this dispatch frame, while we are working our way through that extremely remote part of the World. I suppose if YOU have what is takes...you might be able to join us on our ongoing Tilman Trek...as we cold roll through history. Time will tell...=^]
Scenes from the Lower Mustang, Nepal in March 2009
Let's get back to the Kathmandu Valley...
Presently, Kathmandu is a huge city that has an electricity and internet problem. Fortunately for me, innovations from Tom at HumanEdgeTech.com and Eric at the SatellitePhoneStore.com keep me powered up and communicating. My profuse thanks continues to go out to those solid individuals.
Previously, The Kathmandu Valley was once split into three separate 'kingdoms'. Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur. Each of them has a Durbar square...but each is totally unique. Bhaktapur was founded by King Dev Malla in the 12th century AD and became a fortified city in the 15th century...thanks to King Yaksha Malla. This city is a prime example of the splendid artwork that can be produced when Hindus and Buddhists live together in harmony., we are all more inspired to create when we are at peace. Right?!
The streets of Bhaktapur have an almost medieval setting...for when one explores the alleys and walkways...one truly feels as if it were the middle ages...right down to the huge stone wells that are found every few 'blocks'. Women use buckets on ropes to haul the daily hydration juice...while children run about on the cobblestones...looking for rays of sun that peak through the crenelated rooftops of the tightly packed wood and brick buildings. The royal squares are markedly different though...
Scene from Bhaktapur's Durbar Square
Huge open areas tastefully littered with shrines, multi-story pagodas, statues of kings and lions and some of the most ancient woodwork in Nepal. One impressive feature are the living quarters of the King's wives. 55 intricately carved windows. One window per wife. Sounds complicated. =^]
Some of the pagodas have very detailed carving of the Kama Sutra. The King was benevolent enough to give pictorial displays to his people about love making. That is my kind of King. I'd include an image of that...but this blog is rated PG! =^]
Kharel asked me to remind you all that 'dog' is helping. Thank you Kharel.
If you ever find yourself in Kathmandu...and asking yourself' 'What will we do today.' I suggest connecting with Robbie and seeing the wonders of Bhaktapur first hand. There isn't a soul who wouldn't enjoy that.
I'm still hammering out details of THE race with Raj...and the mini-Time Machine is about to get a few more kilometres out on it. Hurdling through space and time we are...and getting closer to the opening of the SecretSpotStore.com . More about that in the next dispatch...
Until Soon
