Denali Freestyle Expedition
I just received a great picture from Kristina in Zagreb, Croatia. That was actually my first reminder of this event called Easter. You might remember Kristina from 18000ft in June 2008?! If you are a subscriber to the Secret Spot Seven Summits blog (www.phillmichael.com) then you can reflect upon how you virtually met her while we waited out the storm at High Camp on the 2008 Denali Freestyle Expedition. That innocent looking woman could walk even the strongest man deep into the ground. =^o
It's another warm day in Kathmandu...while I play with expedition technology. Eric at the SatelllitePhoneStore.com and I are working out the bugs that are associated with 'Skyping' over the BGAN. He was driving through the Florida Keys and connecting with a cellular card in his laptop...while I was wirelessly connecting my Dell Mini Inspiron to my Hughes 9201 BGAN satellite terminal. Data packets streamed through the satellite(s), cell towers and atmosphere while Eric and I saw video of each other and talked...in real time! Amazing. B^)
The power was out in Kathmandu while we were connecting...but my HET Power 50 (developed by Tom at HumanEdgeTech.com) allowed me to seamlessly communicate...with Power! Thanks again Tom! B^)
We live in an age of science fact...not science fiction! B^]
Medical technology is just as impressive. Dawa and I spent all of Sunday with tasks associated with Phuri's heart surgery. He's going to have his aortic valve replaced. It's pretty far from the routine for a young monk in the 12th poorest country on the planet. His heart beat is astonishingly palpable when one touches his chest. If this were 1909 he could only look forward to an speedy, physical demise towards the next life. In the New Nepal of 2009, we can personally connect with the surgeon and arrange to save a life...thanks to the dedicated and caring doctors...and thanks to unbelievably advanced therapies that alleviate pain and improve quality of life. My Medtronic Freestyle Valve never reminds me of that by quietly working its magic...every second or every day. B^)

discuss the imminent heart surgery
Dawa's is feeling stressed over Phuri's operation, but plenty of support is serving to quell that. I've been trying hard to impress upon Phuri the importance of going through this surgery in a relaxed state. I'm also living proof that a person can live a very fulfilling life post-op. He sees that...and smiles a quiet smile...while his eyes blaze with hope. =^)
I'm going to finalize the admission of his kids into the new and improved school on Wednesday. They are excited. They will be be rigged! =^)
While I've been visiting Dawa's home, he's been cooking up some intensely tasty omelets for me. Unda Manchi (Egg Man in Nepali) is another good nickname for Dawa. This one is going to stick...unless he discovers Teflon. =^]
(top) Lakpa serves up some incredibly fresh and tasty food (bottom) Dawa is Unda Manchi...the Easter Bunny of Nepal! =^)
The watermelons have also been popping up. Lakpa thrust a huge plate full of carrots and melon into my view...prior to the eggs. Oh ya. =^P
Eggs?! Hmmmm...Nepal was, until recently, the last Hindu state on Earth. I don't see ANY evidence of Easter here...but I do wish all of you a Happy Easter!!!! =^)
When Easter finally does make itself known in Nepal, rather than having an Easter Bunny they could have an Unda Manchi named Dawa?! %^)
Dawa and I spent a few minutes walking around the stupa at the Bodinath today. I figured it might be a good way to relieve some of Dawa's tension. We went around and around...as did the prayer wheels...and the strain of the last few days flew away...as it wasn't enjoying the 'kafuffle'. =^)
Mobile meditation is a good way to connect with oneself. Nobody can dispute that.
I was connecting by Iridium satellite phone on the 2008 Denali Freestyle Expedition...which was so painfully slow that I started to count snowflakes. A vast improvement is coming for the 2009 Denali Freestyle Expedition. BGAN service and live videoconferencing from 65 degrees North Latitude...and 20,000ft...is going to be sweeter than pie. B^]
I'll be connecting to the World via the same technology while in Dawa's village...giving progress reports regarding the laying of the foundations of the SherpaSchool.ORG. In years to come, the kids who attend this school will be able to connect with their new friends in other countries via similar communications technology that will be powered by solar systems. Cool.B^]

Hey! Would you like to hear a good song?! When Chris mirrors this dispatch in the Secret Spot Seven Summits blog (www.phillmichael.com) you can listen by clicking on the play button in the entry. I first realized how much I like it while the movie 'The Bucket List' was playing in my mobile office background. That's a good movie. Enjoy! B^]
