Just thinking about all the teams I have been a part of in my lifetime. I have been apart of sports teams, school teams, work teams, and traveling teams. Some of these teams were good, and some were bad...we all know the feeling. I couldn't think of the traits or qualities of what would make up the perfect team, or more specifically I didn't know how I could become the perfect teammate.
One night I got the awesome opportunity to talk with Secret Spot owner and award winning adventurist Phill Michael about this question. After a good discussion with Phill we came up with these 5 easy tips to being the perfect teammate.

1. Be Honest
Honesty is an integral trait of a perfect teammate. When you display integrity, you will quickly become a valued member of your traveling team. If you run into trouble, or your instincts are telling you 'danger!', do not be afraid to speak up. Not communicating to your teammates for whatever reason, is dangerous and can be life-threatening. Communicating and displaying integrity will help you becoming a well respected member of your traveling team.

2. Share Information
This tip for being the perfect teammate works hand in hand with the tip of being honest. For a team to work fluently, the team must be able to communicate their feelings and knowledge honestly and effectively within its members. Information is an important commodity in a team setting and it should never be monopolized by just one person. Everyone in your team shares responsibility for the group's success, and good communication with your teammates will only improve the clarity, understanding, and most importantly the success of your endeavors.

3. Be Diplomatic
Nothing can sink a team faster than a dictator. When you are dealing with your teammates, make sure that you are dealing with them in a sensitive and effective way. Let the members of your team breathe and enjoy their adventure the way they want to. If you must criticize a teammate for whatever reason, make sure to do it in a constructive and private manner. Bad morale can really ruin a trip, sour friendships, and could potentially put your teammates in harms way.

4. Lead By Example
The only way to get others to act efficiently as a team is to be the model of the perfect teammate. Leading by example isn't about showing off or being above the others. It is about performing to the best of your ability and making sure of your own preparation. It's like that old business saying "your network is your net-worth", and when you are constantly striving for excellence in all that you do, your whole team will be striving for the same excellence.Leading by example doesn't mean taking the role of the boss, it only means that you and your team are fully committed and prepared to do what is necessary. Getting everyone on the same page can be as simple as setting a great example.

5. Know Your Stuff
Before going on any expedition you, and your teammate's need to prepare for your trip. Understand the place you and your teammates are traveling to. It is important that you study up on the politics, the weather, the traditions/history so you are prepared for a journey that is great for all parties. Understanding the ins and outs of your surroundings will earn the respect of your team. Whether it's good places to eat or understanding the weather patterns at the top of a mountain, your learned knowledge will help out your teammates no matter what the situation.
