Arun River Musings- Tilman Trek Reloaded

Phill Michael on the edge of Tumlingtar, Nepal

A year ago today we strolled along the banks of the Arun River in remote Nepal. At the hottest part of the day it was about 40 degrees Celsius! It's about -4 degrees Celsius in my little part of Kanadia today. So different...but I enjoy both environments.

A year ago, I was uploading 'light' images and my musings via Contact 4.0 software (Humanedgetech.com)...and an Ipaq/BGAN satellite terminal combination that the SatellitePhoneStore.com hooked me up with. Since I'm at a speedy cable connection right now, I've uploaded higher quality images...as well as some video.

Subscribe to this blog and you can virtually trek through a hidden corner of Nepal with us from now...until mid-November.

I invite you! B^)

Sleeping by the Arun river was soothing

Camped on the banks of the Arun River we are! (insert Yoda laugh here)

I'm reminded of the hundreds of nights I've slept on river banks. There is the sound of running water washing over smooth stones while memories flow through my brain.

A Spectacular Beach on the Arun River

Speaking from experience, river trips are a perfect allegory for life. We start with eyes wide and full of hope and excitement. We are met with challenges...some of us sink...some of us swim...some of us laugh...and some of us cry.

Rapids can provide adversity...or do they!?

Some of us curl up or freeze in fear...and some of us laugh as the waves play with us. Some of us scream like monkeys and some of us smile like the Buddha.

Slowly we float along...stopping to rest...stopping to soak up the sun.

We explore our surroundings...and ourselves.

The River of Life offers us opportunity to wonder what might be just around that next bend...if we are curious enough. Is it a newly carved beach...a herd of Elk...other 'boaters' who have discovered a Secret Spot...a Water Buffalo trying to escape its tether...or is it THE end!?

The terminus of the 'river' is a very long way off for me. Each 'river' I've been on has flowed into a larger one...and eventually the 'ocean'. The 'ocean' knows no boundaries and is never the same, in any given spot, ever...

How has YOUR 'river trip' been!?

Dana and Caroline cross the Arun River

It was a simple day of walking today. Our crew of porters loaded up and we donned our light packs for approximately five hours of strolling.

Bajee Namgel takes a break

There were hundreds of locals to say 'Namaste!' to...and each of their broad smiles, from toddler to octogenarian, was truly genuine. I feel truly blessed to walk amongst these people who are yet to feel they NEED what our crazed technological culture has to offer. There isn't anybody getting stressed out about traffic, the 'credit crunch'...of what time their salon appointment is scheduled for. Not one person.

When your needs are simple and earthly goods hold little value...it becomes easy to have a constant smile and positive outlook.

A Typical Scene in the Arun Valley, Nepal

Here in the Arun Valley, life isn't much different than it was when Tilman's eyes took it all in...though these people have probably never seen a shaven yak with a PDA and satellite terminal!? This yak uses the technology to virtually bring other cultures to YOU.

The Kids at Camp One

We are ALL pretty much the same, but in different locations. These 'foreigners' aren't out to harm me...nor is there a terrorist around every corner who is spending all his time planning the end of my life. The mere thought of that is ridiculous. =^]

Maybe you know that...maybe you don't!?
