Touching the Sky- Tilman Trek Reloaded

Looking back from where we came from
A year ago today we climbed out of the Arun River valley in remote Nepal.
A year ago, I was uploading 'light' images and my musings via Contact 4.0 software (Humanedgetech.com)...and an Ipaq/BGAN satellite terminal combination that the SatellitePhoneStore.com hooked me up with. Since I'm at a speedy cable connection right now, I've uploaded higher quality images...as well as some video.
If you subscribe to this blog (www.phillmichael.com), you can virtually trek through a hidden corner of Nepal with us from now...until mid-November! It's as easy as putting your email address in the subscribe field on the home page of the blog! What are you waiting for?! =^]
If you aren't exhausted by mid-November...you can continue to train your mouse finger(s)...and virtually join us on the Kilimanjaro Freestyle Expedition...as we all ring in the New Year! B^)

Maybe you want to join us in person?!
I invite you! B^)

Bamboo soars above my head
Bamboo soars above my head. It tries to touch the sky, but like us...it never will. The great blue nothingness above us goes on forever...as infinite as our ability to experience. Fortunately, the latter, like nature, abhors a vacuum.

Dana enjoys lunch by the creek
As we move deeper and deeper into places that cradle tiny civilizations the smiles on our faces grow larger. Dana suggested we give this Arun Valley trek a try...way back in February 2008. Now we are living it. There are people who I wish could have joined us for this experience...they know who they are...and my heart is with them always...even as I sleep.

Another new Friend who could speak and read English! =^o
Dawa and I are enjoying the shade of a little outpost...while ladling 'Chang' into the mouths of our porters. These fellows are carrying five times as much weight as we are (literally)...and they 'likes them their liquors'. They generally disappear at the end of each day...off to the nearest settlement...no doubt to fill themselves with the rocket fuel of a libation called 'Roxy'.

Arun Valley Porters

A Porter Rest Stop

Endless Terraced Rice Paddies
We've been walking through fertile rice fields...brown mud squishing between my 'sandaled' feet and mother earth. We've finally reached a place that lives without 21st (or 20th century) technology. A boy with a deformed hand gingerly touches my ancient ice axe and offers me a shy smile. He doesn't try to hide his deformity...I can tell he's proud of it. It's what makes him different.

My new Friend on the Trail

Dawa and the Arun Valley fisherman

Tasty Tiny Teddies
A walking shrub goes by...a smaller than usual Rai man is a blur as he takes his beloved animals some food. Chickens are scratching in the dirt while beetles scream from the trees.
Another man walks directly up to me and practically puts his nose on the Ipaq...then casts me a look of confusion...as if to say, 'what on earth are you doing'.
Our cultures collide.
I'm more than happy to be exposed to his culture...I love it. I'm not entirely sure if he'd really like the one I'm from.

One of Many Bamboo Bridges
These people are completely in touch with their surroundings and nothing goes to waste. The only incongruous thing I can see from my vantage point is plastic wrappers (from the civilized world) littering the ground. We can thank some NGO for bringing these people the things they 'need'...I am sure. =^]
How did they ever live without creamy wafers and 'Chocofun'!?!? Quite satisfactorily...I suspect.
Now the kids are crowding around...intrigued by the little gizmo I'm 'tap typing' upon.
When do we benefit from today's technology...and when does it harm us?! Hmmmm...

Campo Friendly
Until Soon
