Steve Siglin and Phill Michael enjoy freshly cooked food

Master the Essentials...then you can get comfortable!

Freshly cooked food in my belly and great conversation filling the air, my mentor Phill Michael and I discuss the most helpful aspects of expedition communication devices and how they change the way we embrace the world. Whether you're uploading eye opening content to both hemispheres or you're simply checking the weather for storm warnings, they become invaluable resources. Lucky for you, Phill Michael has experience with nearly every level of electronic communication equipment and it is our job to inform you of the newest and most reliable tools on the market.

Phill Michael uses the BGAN to catch up on communication from remote Nepal

Putting this technology to great use, Phill Michael can transport you to the most remote locations of jaw dropping beauty the earth has to offer. Phill and his Secret Spot 7 Summits Team frequently work hand in hand with other companies. When it comes to tech gear, he prefers to work with HumanEdgeTech.com (HET) because they have the most experience with high quality expedition communication devices. He also likes to work with the SatellitePhoneStore.com as they provide a good portal to the Inmarsat network. Join us, as we cover nearly half a dozen technological essentials for your next expedition!

Hughes 9201 BGAN Satellite Modem and Inmarsat Network

First up, we have the impressive combination of the Hughes 9201 and the Inmarsat Network. The Hughes 9201 satellite modem is 6.2 pounds (lbs) of earth spanning high-speed wireless connectivity with a functional wireless range of 100 feet (ft). However, if you find yourself near the North and South poles, which are outside of Inmarsat's coverage, the solution is a less speedy Iridium network. While in Alaska, Phill Michael utilized the Iridium network during the 2008 Denali Freestyle Expedition and came to further appreciate the reliability and higher speeds of the favorable Inmarsat network.

Dendi Sherpa uses the BGAN in a very remote corner of Nepal to connect with his son, Phuri Sherpa, in Kathmandu

Incorporating the human element into our life makes our individual experiences unique. In May, of 2009, Phuri Sherpa endured many hours of open heart surgery in Kathmandu far away from his parents' remote high-altitude village. Fortunately for Phuri's parents, they could speak to their son as if he were right next door. Completely lacking conventional telephony devices, the BGAN communication technology was the only option for easing their worries in their isolated home. You can continue to read about Phuri's journey via this blog.

iPAQ HX2750 Handheld PDA

The iPAQ HX2750 Handheld PDA

Sitting in your chair, your mind is currently enveloped in the endless terraced rice paddies and flowing rivers of the Arun River Valley. In the 2008 Secert Spot Tilman Trek and Denali Freestyle Expedition, Phill Michael uses his iPAQ HX2750 Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) to edit images and send them out immediately, directly from his digital camera's memory stick via a simple card adapter. In addition to its photo editing skills, the HX2750 happily shares and plays music, downloads emails and views the latest headlines from BBC and MSN with ease. As with the HX2750, the newest iPAQs from HumanEdgeTech.com are expedition ready and battle tested, however, HET recommends bringing two PDA's for lengthy expeditions. Kept warm and un-submerged, the acceptably durable iPAQ will treat you well on your journeys and provide you with a handy connection to the rest of the world.

Dell Mini and Asus Convertible Expedition Tablet/Notebook

Excellent! You have just reached 14,000 ft and you want to share photos of mind altering mountain passes and exquisite insects from Nepal...only your laptop will not turn on. Ah yes, at altitudes above 12,000 ft most manufacturers claim that conventional spinning hard drives can fail you completely. Alternatively from HumanEdgeTech.com, we find the Asus Convertible Expedition Notebook is a marvelous machine, reconfigured, beefed up, and fed growth hormones to meet the needs of your trip. The Asus is not just a laptop, as it transforms into a touch screen tablet. Wielding a 24GB Shock-Proof solid state hard drive, the Asus Convertible Expedition Notebook from HET is packing some serious heat for only weighing 2.12 lbs. Equipped with HumanEdgeTech's Contact5 dispatch software, and easily configured to connect with the High Speed Inmarsat or the Thuraya and Iridium satellite networks, these handy machines will keep you uploading breathtaking content from anywhere on the planet.

Urgen Sherpa and Phill Michael uses a Dell Mini 10 while working out foundation details for the SherpaSchool.ORG

On the other hand, there is the Dell Mini 10. Phill Michael proved it was powerful enough to easily handle international Skype calls to friends and family from unique locations. The Mini 10 is available with a solid state hard drive and up to 2GBs of SDRAM. This mini laptop is rugged enough to travel the world and makes it possible to connect with friends, sponsors and blog readers, from the incredibly remote yak trails of the Nepalese Himalayas.

HumanEdgeTech Power 50 Battery Charger

Young Denji Sherpa uses equipment powered by the HumanEdgeTech.com Power 50

What about the Power!? Surprisingly all the power you need is derived from Phill Michael's favorite piece of tech gadgetry, the Power50 from HumanEdgeTech.com. Ditch your heavy fossil fuel generator and automotive batteries for a 1, 2 Knockout combo of Solar Panels and an HET Power50. Unlike small electronics, a laptop will always need a battery in between the Solar Panel and the computer. Your HET Power50 can be charged via AC, DC or solar panel connections. It has pass through power allowing you to charge both your Power50 and all other peripherals. It is possible to adjust the voltage power from 5-19 Volts (V), so the HET Power50 charges a range of electronic items from the iPAQ to 19V laptops. Click on the play button below and/or download to view breathtaking Secret Spot video from remote Nepal, and see for yourself how technology allows us to share the beauty of our planet.
